This new module has been produced in response to an increasing demand for the professional development of staff in areas such as curriculum, careers guidance, necessary to support effective subject and vocational choice and an associated need for schools to support the development of enterprising young people.

Being enterprising means possessing the values, attitudes and abilities to develop and use personal resources creatively and constructively in innovative ways in any context

Excellence through Enterprise, Learning and Teaching Scotland, 2005

Increasingly many teachers and lecturers are expected to involve themselves in and take responsibility for aspects of curriculum and careers guidance and the preparation of their pupils for lifelong learning and education for work and enterprise.

Young people need to understand the world that they will be entering, that their skills will be in demand and therefore they have a vested interest in pursuing the highest levels of attainment while at the same time gaining knowledge of the world of work. It is the essence of what education is for and why we have put enterprise in education at the heart of our educational strategy.

Peter Peacock, Minister for Education, Determined to Succeed website

Through a blended learning format, this module will focus, in depth on building the confidence, knowledge, intellectual and practical skills of staff who are involved in whole school careers education and helping pupils choose subject areas leading to desired and appropriate vocational pathways. Further it will look at how staff can be supported in the expected delivery and development of enterprise education.

In an educational setting, it is generally recognised that knowledge and understanding of these concepts are required of the pastoral care and guidance practitioner. Furthermore, it has now been acknowledged that a range of education professionals may require such skills. The course would benefit classroom teachers, principal teachers, head of faculty, enterprise co-ordinators, senior managers and all staff whose daily work impinges on such areas.
